Hello King's!

My name is Violette Khammad, and I am happy to announce that I am running as a Presidential candidate for the KUCSC, 2017-2018. I am in my third year of an Honours Double Major in Sociology and Political Science.
I have been on Council since my first year at King's, and the KUCSC helped me with my transition into a place that I now call home. I whole-heartedly believe in all the advocacy, programming, and work that the KUCSC does,  but I have numerous ideas on how to make Council's work even more reflective of the diverse student population. I am truly interested in working with YOU to better your student experience here at King's. I want to make sure each and every student is included in the conversation.

KUCSC

In the role of VPSA, I had first-hand experience advocating on behalf of students alongside the current President on various King's committees, including: Food Services; Scholarships and Bursaries; and Planning Committee. In addition, I planned speaker series and awareness weeks (pre-exam wellness, and healthy relationships week) with the Student Outreach Team. This position gave insight into the true definition of leadership, as I oversaw a portfolio of 40 council members.

KAMP Mentor

King's Academic Mentoring Program

As a KAMP mentor, I had the pleasure of mentoring 2 first-year students to enhance their academic transition to King's. Through this experience, I learned about numerous available King's resources that I can use to help me with my role, if elected as President.

LYAC

As the Ward 10 Youth Councilor on the London Youth Advisory Council (LYAC), I represented the youth of Westmount Area and amplified their voices to local politicians and leaders. In order to gauge the youth opinion, I hosted focus groups in my community about important issues in our ward, and the city.

Off Campus Don

In my position as an OC Don, I worked together with the OC Don team to plan events for first year off-campus students, and to make sure their transition to university, and to King's was as seamless as possible. From academic to social events, I actively took part in finding out what first years students are interested in.

Opportunities

Co-op placements with past student leaders

  • In collaboration with past King’s student leaders and alumni, I want to establish co-op opportunities for students that will enhance their competitiveness, in terms of their job experience and networking skills.

  • Upon election, I plan to connect with King’s leaders and alumni though the Alumni Office to discuss the creation of student co-op positions in their workplace/organization

Graduate application assistance

  • I want to work with the Political Science department to establish an assistance program that is free of cost and ensures that upper-year students can go to a staff/professor involved in this program with all their questions.

Peer Support Network

  • I am committed to establishing a Peer Support Network at King’s with the support of student volunteers, who will be undergoing specific training in the summer.

  • In order to start off the network, I plan on working with the Manager of Wellness and the department of King’s Counselling for inquiries on training and support on getting the program started (on a weekly-basis at first).

More accessible academic counselling hours

  • If elected as President, I want to advocate for more accessible academic counselling hours at the Academic Dean’s Office (ADO).

  • Direct academic advising and consultations with counsellors is not only important to students during Intent to Register, but also with program-specific inquires and module requirements.

Development

Full review of King’s mental health services

  • I want to conduct a full review of mental health services at King’s – in terms of average wait times; exploring the possibility of drop-in sessions; and offering additional resources during midterm and exam season.

  • In collaboration with the new Manager of Wellness, the KUCSC should not only push for this review, but also for stronger visibility of personal, group and career counsellors.

LGBTQ+ Programming

  • Add the lens of LGBTQ+ students into issues brought forward and into planned events and programming at King’s. For instance, one idea is for the KUCSC to add educational campaigns, specific community resources and support services for LGBTQ+ students during awareness weeks.

  • Provide trainings and establishing a chapter at King’s to promote an intersectional and inclusive way of thought inside and outside the classroom.

Sexual Violence Education and Prevention

  • I want the KUCSC to work with King’s in partnership to hire the Sexual Violence Advisor who will be the main support to the survivor in terms of helping with academic accommodations, personal support, counselling and anything else they need.

  • If elected, I want to ensure that there is a campus-wide training on the sexual violence policy for students, faculty, and administration for a better understanding of the implementation of the policy.

  • There should also be resources listed in King’s syllabi for all courses that can help students learn about the supports offered on campus and how to navigate the resources, when needed.

Inclusion and Diversity; Wellness Commissioners

  • I plan to create Inclusion and Diversity Commissioners (i.e. cultural, ability, gender etc) who will help shed light on the diverse student population here at King’s.

  • Create a wellness commissioner – who can solely focus on bringing #WellnessWednesdays to King’s every month, an ongoing campaign on wellbeing and mental health that the KUCSC should focus on.

Growth

Local art exhibits on campus

  • I would like to work with local London artists to showcase their artwork in the SLC while creating an even more vibrant space for students to admire art and learn more about it.

  • Another good place to partner is the McIntosh Gallery at Western as they are happy to host an exhibit at King’s to promote campus culture and art appreciation on campus.

Food waste re-distribution program

  • Primarily, the proposed idea was to re-distribute left-over food from Tim Hortons to St. Joe’s, which is a great step towards supporting local charities in the community. I would like to add one more component to this program, and ensure that students who have been studying all day on campus can also benefit from this.

  • If elected as president, I will ensure that we can finally get this program running and coordinate with St. Joe’s once per week a schedule of when they can pick up the left-over food from campus.

Student Feedback on KUCSC Strategy and Vision

  • I want to work with the Chief Communications Officer to create a survey on how familiar students are with the KUCSC; what areas we need to be improving; and what other services/opportunities Council should be providing the student population.

Student Consultation on Campus Space Assessment

  • It it is important for the KUCSC to have student consultations to assess what students think should be on the priority list for space usage.

  • After receiving feedback, I will be working with the King’s Planning Committee and Physical Plant to ensure that the student voice is included and kept in priority during the Campus Space Assessment.
